Hurricane Dorian Relief

Hurricane Dorian Relief

The COS is organizing a volunteer relief effort to help COS board member Duranda Ash as she wishes to serve her country in meeting their eyecare needs in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian. Duranda's office was the only ophthalmology office in Freeport, Bahamas, to survive major damage and she has been in conversation with the Minister of Health to develop an aid plan. He is behind her efforts and is willing to allow those with US medical licenses to be registered much more easily so they can help out quickly.

While many of the details are being worked out, initially, we would like to find out who is willing and available to help out over the next several months during this time of need. We will be working to staff both Duranda's Freeport clinic and her Nassau clinic (where there are many displaced people) with an ophthalmologist and/or an optometrist. Dr. Ash's staff will serve with the volunteers at both sites.

The volunteer positions will work for someone willing to go for one week or more. Please indicate below if you are able to help with equipment or with volunteering.

Once your equipment is reviewed, if it is needed, we would supply an address in Florida that you would need to send the equipment to for shipment to the Bahamas. If your equipment is something that needs calibration or lubricating, this should be done before sending it.
