Foster A Missionary!
The Christian Ophthalmology Society announced the launch of the “Foster A Missionary” Program in August 2021.
Every other year a missionary ophthalmologist is chosen by the COS Board to be sponsored by the Society for two years.
Society members will support the efforts of the “fostered” missionary throughout those two years by various means such as:
- Making donations for refractive surgeries, or premium cataract surgeries.
- Donating gently used and new ophthalmic and operating room equipment.
- Praying for the missionary, their family, and their ministry.
- Doing something creative to encourage and support them!
- Including their staff in this opportunity.
- Highlighting the missionary in their office through “FAM” brochures and sharing with patients about what support can be given to help the missionary’s ministry .
Our first two sponsored missionaries were Dr. Wendy Hofman and Dr. Jonathon Pons, who serve in Gabon and Eswatini, respectively.
In August 2025, at the COS Annual Meeting, the COS announced that the sponsored missionary for 2025-27 is Dr. John Cropsey. Dr. Cropsey is serving as Director of Global Ophthalmology and Development, Rwanda International Institute of Ophthalmology (RIIO), and Eye Love Africa, a project of Serge, in the African country of Rwanda.
