Dr. Cropsey's needs
The Cropsey’s team vision is to empower Africans to be the hands and feet of Jesus for the blind by training, mentoring, and equipping eye care professionals.
–Training ophthalmology residents at Rwanda International Institute of Ophthalmology (RIIO) in the 4-year program to be excellent cataract surgeons
–Mentoring these same residents during regular time together serving patients in the clinic and OR as well as through time spent in God’s Word at a regular Bible study
–Equipping RIIO graduates and other African ophthalmologists in the region with the necessary equipment & supplies needed to provide high quality services to the blind poor.
You can teach a resident to fish (train) and even show them where to fish (mentor), but if they don’t have a fishing pole, it doesn’t really matter.
In ophthalmology, our fishing poles are expensive! It takes about $100k to get someone set-up to do high quality cataract surgery. Most Africans don’t have access to that kind of capital. So, in addition to training and mentoring, we have to partner with our graduates and others working in the toughest places to equip them with the instruments and infrastructure needed to deliver what they are capable of at scale.
Also, Eye Love Africa (ELA) currently has multiple partners Rwanda, Congo and Burundi that we are coming along side of to maximize their capacity. We have equipped 3 partners (Dr. Toney Mugisha, Dr. Jason Pithuwa, Dr. Adrien Bironkwaninguvu) with high quality equipment to do cataract surgical outreaches. Generous donations will help us deliver 1,000s of outreach cataract surgeries in some of the toughest, war-torn parts of Congo and Burundi.
