Brief Bio - Dr. John Cropsey
Following Jesus is always an adventure! I grew-up at a rural mission hospital in Togo, West Africa, where my parents served as medical missionaries. As the youngest of four boys, it was the perfect playground complete with jungle, waterfalls and motorcycles. Seeing how my parents loved others left a deep impression on me.
I met my incredible wife, Jessica, in second grade while my family was in the US for a year of home assignment. We met up again in high school and the rest was history. I attended undergraduate and medical school at the University of Michigan and completed residency at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia in 2009. This was followed by an amazing two-year global ophthalmology fellowship with Dr. Ben and Jenny Roberts at Tenwek Hospital, Kenya.
We have served the past 15 years in East and Central Africa as missionaries with Serge. Our passion is to empower African eye care professionals to be the hands and feet of Jesus for the blind.
From 2011 to 2021, our family was part of a large, multi-specialty medical team assisting in the development of Hope Africa University’s teaching hospital in Kibuye, Burundi. We saw the number of doctors in Burundi literally double through this ministry, many of our graduates becoming medical missionaries themselves! This gave our kids (Elise, Micah and Sam) a very similar childhood to the one I experienced in Togo. They’ve been swept away in flash floods, experienced coups, emergency evacuations and so much more. It is exciting to see how God is at work in their lives.
I joined the Rwanda International Institute of Ophthalmology as the Director of Clinical Training and Global Ophthalmology in 2022. At the same time, Jessica and I also started the Eye Love Africa project at Serge with the vision of eradicating needless blindness in Africa via the motto of Train. Mentor. Equip.
God has been blessing these strategic partnerships with 26 ophthalmologists already trained or in training!
We can’t wait to see how God will continue to use these young men and women as they lay down their lives for God’s glory and the world’s good.
